History of Montessori Education

Maria Montessori (August 31, 1870 – May 6, 1952) was the first Italian female physician to hold a very reputable status. Being a physician enabled her to combine her medical background with her passion for education.

Maria Montessori developed her theory based on her observations of children that attended her childcare center (Casa dei Bambini meaning “Children’s House”) in the early 1900’s. She continued building knowledge and gathering information on her findings and research to develop the theory that when children are learning within a naturally supporting environment, they are inclined to acquire the skills needed for life.

Maria Montessori also designed and crafted resources (concrete materials) and techniques to support her concepts that are still used today to promote natural growth based on children’s learning, interests and development.
